The Impossible is Possible
The boundaries of my imagination are the boundaries of my world. I can use that which I can respond to, but that which I ignore or have to ignore remains closed to me as an option. Many possible things are impossible within the clients’ framework (in the context of their problems): that conflicts dissolve, that other people like them, that others might like to do something for them, that they might find something easy, that fear loses its significance and so on …! The consequent attitude of the counsellor “It could also be quite different!”, which keeps the possibilities as an option, which creates hope, is an indispensable technique in the context of the guiding process ‘Resonance’. In psychotherapy research, induction into an expectation of improvement is a central effectiveness factor, and reckoning with the impossible is a way of implementing it.
