Function of Goal Setting
Goal setting forms a focus for the team, which enables the following:
• Commitment – Only where there is a (clear) focus, can a team commit to it. If the focus is missing, the commitment fades away. If commitment fades away, the team breaks up into splinter groups or it separates, and a type of guest mentality develops amongst the team members.
• Conflict processing – A focus provides guidance about which are the relevant (factual) conflicts that go alongside the goal setting. If a focus is missing, then secondary areas of conflict and factual problems are personalised.
• Value contribution assessment – a focus can be used to deduce what value the work of each team member has for the attainment of the goal, i.e. the fulfilment of the task. Otherwise the assessments become arbitrary or are dependent upon sympathies (or other irrelevant bases).
