The Factual Dimension of Sense
In order to communicate one must make a choice. What topic should one speak about? Even to want, one must make a choice: where does one wish to direct one’s attention? What should be processed, solved, changed, improved etc.? Social as well as psychological systems constantly choose topics and factual content and with it, create (positive or negative) sense.
Topics and things can be coupled with each other or separated. Once they are identified, they give direction and provide orientation: “I will occupy myself with this (and not that) now!” This direction can be changed at any time. “Now we will do something else!” Even the accuracy or the granularity with which the topic or the matter is handled, can be varied and controlled “Today I won’t be so exact with the housework!”
The orientation towards things limits the amount of that with which a system can occupy itself. One can only act in the present and, as one knows, this is short. As soon as it has emerged from the future, it has already passed. Therefore, the choice of a factual focus always determines that which remains unprocessed and undiscussed, as well.
