Living with Distance

What is meant by the need ‘distance’? Imagine a toddler in the sand pit, which plays with complete attention in the sand and sees and hears nothing else. Here is a small list for adults: exploring inner worlds, experiencing one’s own rhythm, following one’s own thoughts and feelings without distraction, losing oneself in day dreams, doing nothing and experiencing peace and quiet, having secrets, concentrating completely on one thing, indulging in a hobby on your own (crafts, programming, sport etc.), meditating, being immersed and forgetting the time. At the core of it all is the expectation that it is worthwhile pursuing an internal or external activity alone, and, while doing so, feeling securely connected with the world.
