Evaluating

Evaluating regulates feelings (“Should I be pleased or annoyed?”), it gives options for action (“I am only giving him my opinion about this impossible behaviour!”), and it determines what is being evaluated (“I find this unreliability impossible!” or “I find this colleague impossible!”). This reduces complexity and thus it also decides what consequences the situation has for one’s own behaviour. Therefore, evaluating always has an impact on the explanations and descriptions which have been made about the situation. Counselling can begin by focusing the attention of the client on the benefits his evaluations have for himself (e.g. “I can only feel well in myself when I have not made a mistake. Therefore, I always find others, who have made a mistake, stupid, and it relieves me if I can sometimes accuse others, rather than always accusing myself.”)
