Difficulties in Deciding

One possible symptom of unconscious conflicts is difficulties in making decisions. Decisions are always linked with disadvantages, too. The more someone desires to find the ‘right’ decision, the more probable it is that he is struggling with unconscious fears, or feelings of guilt or shame. These threaten to become conscious when one commits oneself and must therefore lose possibilities and take risks. In addition, one exposes oneself with every decision and becomes visible as a target for criticism and accusations. This can, in turn, activate unconscious fears, which lead to delays and avoidance.

Therefore, difficulty with decisions is a significant symptom which, in every consultation process, no matter if in coaching, psychotherapy, supervision etc., must not be casually overlooked or only treated exclusively on the behavioural level (“Now we will consider the pros and cons!”).
